The parent - governor's role

    Just to clarify: people with mental health difficulties (as with any other health difficulty) can be governors - they are only prevented from becomming governors if they have been previously sectioned under the MH Act.
     
  2. The first point I would make is that to stand for election as a parent governor you must be the parent or have parental responsibility for a pupil at the school. The basic rules for being a governor are that you are over 18 and are not disqualified from being a governor by the Regulations. The disqualification rules are set out in Schedule 6 to the School Governance (Constitution) England Regulations 2007.
    The composition of governing bodies at local authority maintained schools are subject to those same regulations- if the school is an Academy its Articles of Association will apply. In local authority maintained schools then the general rule of thumb is that one third of the governing body will be parents, although depending on the type of school not all the parents are elected. The governing body can be between 9-20 (again with some minor differences around school type). The number of parent governors will be determined by the number of governors overall - e.g. in a community school of nine governors, a third must be parents, therefore, there will be three parent governors. The governing body cannot add to that total without going through a formal process to change its Instrument of Government. It would have to adopt another method to resolve the tie.
    The minutes of governing body and governing body committee meetings and papers circulated at those meetings are open to public scrutiny, unless they have been declared confidential. They may be posted on the school's website, but if not should be available to view on request.
