The Long March Toward Socialism...

    ...just got longer, I'm afraid.
As I'm sure everyone knew, the Democratic Socialists of America (that's the Bernie Sanders people) have been meeting in Atlanta since last Thursday about how best to destroy capitalism and create a new America of fairness and equality where they get to boss everyone around for a change - but, for some inexplicable reason, people are laughing at them. And at this.

In case you're worried about missing anything there are hours and hours of comedy gold, I mean earnest debate and discussion, here:

America has already got socialism. Who do think pays for all the military?

Interesting that you describe them as "the Bernie Sanders people" when Sanders isn't a member. Almost like you're trying to mislead people.

The US will not go 'far' down the socialist road, they are or will probably be, the last bastion of freedom and enterprise and it is that which has made them the most successful nation on earth. Without the US economy driving the rest of the worlds economies and their military support we would all be in a parlous state by now.

Cheer up @artboyusa - if Trump tweets enough about how socialists are bad people maybe some nutters with more assault rifles than brain cells will go out and start murdering them.

It depends on how you define successful. You could make a similar argument about the British Empire, or Roman Empire.

Socialism is the control of society and the economy by the community, or government. Capitalism is the control of society, and the economy by the market. If we go to extremes both systems are unfair and deleterious to society and so should be avoided. At the present time we have a mixed economy but have clearly moved too far into , as Edward Heath called it, the unacceptable face of capitalism. On top of this, we have the likes of Trump who play the scapegoating card to gain the sort of society they can exploit. We need to do everything we can to oppose both ends of the scale and as far as I am concerned, a pox on those who don't.

More bitter irony than humour - it appears to be the American way these days.

At this time the situation is that the USA is the worlds most dominant influence.
Power comes and power goes over time and I did not claim a 1000 year Reich for them.;)

The sad part of this thread us that the author of it ignored the examples the benefits of socialism in America as it is so I won’t contribute any more than this to a very uneducated thread.

An elite you mean? Look at the history of socialist countries for plenty of examples.
More the economy and money supply IMO.
    Agreed.
Our economy is only partially mixed and actual wealth creation by 'value added processes' has been very neglected for decades, since the late 70's IMO.
He has played the left wing socialist nutters at their own game and that is why the establishment hates him. He has exposed their soft underbelly.
    LOL.

We need to oppose both left and right extremism you could/should have said.

So, where are the extremes and who decides?

The only bright side of this is that the gunman committed his murders in a state that uses the death penalty. IMO

The term Socialism in America as used by the right seems to mean the terror that someone you don't approve of might benefit from taxes you paid. I mean, socialised medicine for instance, what a sorry mess that is in the rest of the world. Being at home with many guns for protection is the way to be, they'll protect you from illness, environmental degradation, etc. and if they don't work you can shoot yourself and no-one will care.

You're right. Mr Trump's tweets usually are in very bad taste.

Don't care about Trump or his posts but I think a "joke" about indiscriminate murder is in bad taste particularly in the light of the events of the past 48 hours.

    It wasn't a joke.

By yesterday evening the USA had had more mass shootings than days in 2019, many committed by hateful gun-owning individuals in a society where prejudice receives presidential endorsement on a daily basis. Kristallnacht by social media.

If you're uncomfortable with the message behind it, please feel free to report it.
