The Henley Review

  1. When I'm being bombarded by students who all want something, my frequent response is "we'll see...." since I am wary of saying yes to things before I've thought about them. Quite often, the "we'll see" becomes "no".
    I think Darren Henley's review is very good - I am in agreement with most of his recommendations.
    I think the government response is mostly "we'll see..." which will eventually become "no".
    Forgive my cynicism, but I fear that this government has already made up it's mind. I used to be quite blue, but I'm rapidly turning pink...

    Unless I've missed something, I think Gove is referring to Recommendation 21 ("Much primary school classroom teaching of music is provided by non-specialist teachers").
    If so, I think it's grossly insulting to imply that music educators in general need more specialism and expertise.

    I think he's saying that general class teachers can't be expected to be expert music educators with the stupidly low level of hours training they receive. Fair enough!
    I notice that primary specialists are not considered good enough to become a Specialist Leader in Education. That's not fair. How come middle school people are good enough? They only teach 4 year groups! Ridiculous.
    On the plus side, perhaps I stand a chance of getting another specialist music teaching post now the review is out. I can cover an awful lot of those recommendations!
     
  4. I've only had a relatively quick read through the review so far but I'm struck by a few things.
    I approve (as if I'd do anything else!) of the repeated assertion that music is an academic subject and that it deserves its place in the curriculum on those terms.
    I rather like the idea of Music Education Hubs. Unless I've misread, it sounds like pooling resources and ideas might be something that could give better financial stability to music education. Or, put another way, save our jobs!
    There are a couple of questions that I have, mostly about Primary education but I'm going to read on a little whilst I eat my dinner.
    Oh, and BTW
    that's how I read it to.

    If that's what Gove meant, he should have said it.
    The wild generalisation that there is a "need for more specialism and expertise amongst music educators" is the type of statement that panders to the worst in journalism. I doubt that papers such as the Daily Mail will be interested in music education, but if they were it simply opens the door to headlines such as "Government review reveals that music teachers lack expertise".

    Interesting how recommendation 5 talks about an Arts entitlement at KS4 but Henley's recommendation to put music into the English Bac is buried in the explanation underneath - resulting in the government failing to address this in their initial response.
