Not convinced by this one!
I probably shouldn't be laughing so much!
I added beetroot juice to my chicken curry last night.
I should have photographed that for my Hidden Gem. Doh!!!.
Pink chicken curry . It tasted ok though.
Meanwhile, get ready for the disaster of real HG entry. ( just got to find phone first.
These look very, very yummy.
Hadn't heard of that before - but I can see how it might work.
Oh yes ...
... sorry - can't say I fancy this. Brave to try though!
Mmmm - delicious.
Oh - one of my favourite fruits! Doubly delicious!
Very neat looking cake - despite your tales of woe.
... Brilliant! You are a real dark horse in the baking stakes Gargs - why aren't we hearing and seeing more of your talents?
Here is the entry from the Marlin household.
Cake covered in vanilla butter icing.
Cut into it to reveal ... ... ...
Gemstone inspired sponge cake! Diamond cream with Ruby, Citrine, Sapphire, Emerald and Amethyst layers.
In closer detail
The colours weren't as strong as I had hoped. It was the first time I've used gel colours and I wasn't sure how much to use. It was also the first time I had used these cake tins which I bought a couple of years ago. One cake mix (using 3 eggs) divided into 5 small tins.
Tasting notes: Vanilla buttercream was not my best effort - I was a bit heavy-handed with the vanilla extract I think - but it was still edible. Cake was good. I was worried about knocking too much air out as I added the colours, but it rose fine. Sister gave me A+, brother-in-law wondered if I should have flavoured each layer eg. raspberry for the ruby, lemon for the citrine, blueberry for the sapphire, lime for the emerald and something like blackcurrant for the amethyst.
Wow @marlin. That looks amazing! I assume your brother in law doesn't bake. It's easy to make suggestions but much harder to put these things into practice!
Sorry, I ate most of mine. it was a coffee sponge with coffee butter cream icing. Might make another for a picnic on Sunday and might post a pic of it.
Gargs and Marlin-excellent cakes. Well done.
Wow, what amazing entries. You are all fantastic cooks. Bravo!
Makes me so glad I didn't try to make the chocolate cake with 'ruby beetroot' (as the gem) flavouring. My sponge cakes tend to turn out so flat. Plus I've been otherwise occupied this week.
Yay - a cake rainbow! Well done Marlin!
Yes, brilliant entries.
Whereas as mine, no imagination whatsoever and
I think I had the oven too hot for too long - a bit lot overbaked.
Instead I'll offer some flowers from the garden to the winners so far @sparklepig2002 @gargs @marlin @bombaysapphire
Are they buns with jammy centres? They look tasty and those in the photo don't look overbaked at all.
You definitely need to take your share of the flowers @lizziescat. Those look good and are just as imaginative as my creme brulees (why don't I get magic accents? !). I felt boring making something that I do regularly anyway - I wanted to be able to scale down because of my diet.
We are all being very self critical this week. Can I request something easy next week? @gargs - are you settling next week's challenge?
Thank you.Don't put yourself down lizziescat - your buns look great. I bet they taste good too.
I forgot to post before going out.
Will try from my phone...
