    Q: As a new leader, how do you identify leadership potential within an organisation?

    When we first meet people we undoubtedly make judgements based upon such things as the way they look, their body language, smile, tone of voice and how articulate they are in explaining their role and core objectives. The truth is that unless they are some kind of psychopath, in most instances the way an individual presents to you initially will be symptomatic of how they are perceived by their colleagues and pupils. Do they inspire confidence? Would you trust them with a delegated task? Some of those questions can really only be answered over a period of time.

    When I first became a Head I knew that my school needed to change in some ways and so I interviewed every member of staff and asked them to explain what they did at school and especially those things which were not necessarily in their job description. I also asked what they had previously been employed as elsewhere and it highlighted lots of new skills, which many said that they would be happy to use in their current roles but had hitherto not been empowered to do so.

    Over time I allocated tasks to each person who had intimated that they had further potential; I delegated and then observed how they met deadlines, interacted with others, shared their vision for the task in hand and created a positive culture. Leaders provide solutions, they nurture and inspire and most importantly they deliver because they believe in putting pupils first and constantly striving to improve. They are not afraid to hold people to account and nor do they divide and conquer. They are loyal, diligent and understand the importance of placing the school needs ahead of their own. They are circumspect and humble, never being afraid to admit their mistakes. Mostly they love the job and are a pleasure to be around. Fortunately I found that I had lots of leaders within my school and it was a pleasure to work with them and a privilege to help nurture their talent.
