teaching maths and science in my NQT year

Discussion in 'Science' started by gemmagemma4, Jun 19, 2011.

  1. I am just about to finish my PGCE course in science (biology main subject). In September I am lucky enough to have a job. I am teaching science and also maths. I am concerned about the maths as I am going to teach up to year 11 top set. How can I prepare for the maths?

  3. Wow teaching tyop set is very brave! I had to teachmaths this year (also biology main subject). I would say try and get hold of the SOW now so you can have a really good look through it, and practice anything you are unfamiliar with. Borrow some of the course textbooks and practice the questions yourself.

I did maths A level so don't find the maths challenging, more the actual teaching of the maths, as I have all bottom sets, and trying to think of alternative methods fo i.e. adding fractions I found tricky. The maths TA has been a life saver - she shows me the curent techniques the pupils are expected to do - you will be surprised how the methods have changed since we were at school!

It seems a very brave Maths dept that is giving top set yr 11 to an untried, non-specialist teacher. It might be different if the scientist was a Physicist but a Biologist to boot!

Are you really sure you will have top set?

I should add that I taughht a mixed Maths and science (with Games as well) in my first year but the Maths groups were usually below the middle.
