Teaching in the Prison Service

Discussion in 'Special educational needs' started by YOI_Teacher, May 14, 2011.

  1. I work in education in the prison service. Where abouts in the country are you?

South East - West Sussex / East Sussex based

  3. The first would be to find out which prisons are near you. Decide whether you only wish to work with males or females, adults or youths, or if not bothered - think carefully.
Then you will need to find the education provider for each prison - each will be different - as education is outsourced. Some providers will require applicants directly others via HR/main college site...some providers are better than others - a quick google will soon show you one establishment that is not that popular at the moment - they had teachers striking due to their poor working conditions and pay cuts etc.
It would be worth contacting directly if no vacancies jump out....

I was looking into teaching in the prison service while between jobs last summer. I was advised to contact Manchester college who have a lot of provision contracts for prisons around the country, including one in West (I think) Sussex. I didn't have time to go through with it in the end so can't give you any more info than this, sorry!
I think you should definitely take on board the advice of giving careful consideration to what kind of facility you want to work in.
    Good luck!

  6. TBH teahcing in a prison would never make a great summer job as the time it takes to get thorugh security checks etc would be too long - it can take an absolute age.
Re the institution you mentioned, I believe that they hit the headlines quite extensively in the last year due to their teaching conditions and terms of service they have forced on their teaching staff.
Certainly I would question how they will fair in the next rounds of bidding for education contracts in prisons when they start again.

Thank you very much. I did have Toe by Toe in mind. Is the security for volunteers always good?

  9. Security to get you passed in to the prison - high!
Personal security - how extensive depends on what you're expecting tbh, what garde prison and the levels that pass under the local security arrangements of that prison.
