Teachers will get a pay rise of 2.75 per cent but it's not enough, say unions

    The pay rise, which forms part of a pay settlement for public sector workers, is set to be announced next week. However, some of the money will come from existing school budgets. The unions believe that the pay increase is not good enough and warned that because the pay rise is not fully funded more cuts to children’s education will have to be made:

    ‘Teachers will be given a 2.75 per cent pay rise, at least partially funded by new money from the Treasury, it has been reported.

    It is part of a £2 billion pay settlement for public sector workers that is set to be unveiled on Monday, according to the Times.’

    How convenient that this measure has been confirmed at the same time as death throes of May's tenure as PM. How she is looking for something positive to hang her legacy on. How about using the £33.5m funding earmarked for Academies development programme, as revealed today, to increase pay rises further still? (Thought that there was 'no magic money tree'?)

    Academies award, or don’t award, any pay rise they like. They are in effect private businesses.

    Which is why they need to go. I am waiting for Corbyn to win the next election.

    Teachers were initially due to get 2%, and that's been confirmed as 2.75%. The government weren't going to fund the 2% (and still aren't), but WILL fund the extra 0.75%.

    The good news about this is job security. If schools had to find the extra themselves, this would potentially have come from staff cuts. As schools are only having to find the 2%, which they were going to have to do already, the dangers of staffing cuts have not increased due to this pay rise.

    In other words, your school was planning to have to find 2% in September anyway, and that remains the position.

    None of this negates all of the issues already mentioned, but it is at least a little good news, I think.

    DFE Press Release here confirms that, as last year, the minimum and maximum of the STPCD pay scales (primarily the MPR, UPR and Leadership pay ranges) will increase by 2.75%. So the only teachers guaranteed 2.75% are those who will be on the minimum of the pay ranges in September in LA schools. All other teachers it depends how and whether the school distributes the money. Although academies will get the (very small amount) of additional funding they aren't obliged to give any increases, let alone 2.75%.

    DfE is funding 0.75% of the increase but schools will have to fund the other 2% from existing budgets. Why? The DfE's explanation, with its usual finely honed sense of the absurd, is because 2% is the amount the DFE "assessed as affordable in the Department’s evidence to the STRB in January". So that's all right then, that explains everything...:rolleyes:

    I doubt our teaching staff will get 2.75%. Everyone got the same pay rise last year, which made a mockery of the performance management/performance related pay policy of our school.

    Public sector pay has been frozen for a very long time now. And once teachers get to the ceiling of their low pay salary there really isn't much there for classroom teachers anyway.

    It would be better to bring in Overtime and Bonus pay. Maybe more support for teachers who are stressed and flexi hours.
