how odd, as an ex chemistry teacher, I get a constant stream of job offers, and as a TA, I'm in a school that cannot get a single applicant for chemistry posts....

Where do you live, though?. I get plenty of job offers but not paid ones!

They're not job offers then, but rather volunteering opportunities.

Talking of that, how about VSO? Sure they'd love someone with your experience, and you do get a living stipend apparently.

Why do you work as a TA and not a teacher?

    Don't need the money?

You have to be self-financing, yet another chance to 'put something back'.

Better with people genuinely in need than helping to put money into agency's pockets. I only mentioned it as I was thinking of it myself.

Perhaps so but having to fork out for airfares food, and accommodation, etc., abroad is going to make me worse off, not better.

People I know had accommodation and food etc. covered. Don't know about flights. You do live like a local though, by all accounts.

A friend went into to VSO a couple of years ago and it was looking for retired professionals to go and teach but who had to be entirely self-financing, either out of their own pockets, or through sponsorship, which they had to obtain.

@Mrsmumbles never heard of BOXER. Similarly, mine isn't a cat.

Are you sure? Are you absolutely, completely, honestly sure about this?

Animal Farm. Sold for glue at the end - a true betrayal of the working classes. Very sad.
What is it? Is it a bored panda?

I've worked in several schools were they have been unable or struggled to find a suitable Chemistry teacher.

It could be because in the region there are a number of large industrial chemistry plants that take all the chemists from teaching.
