BBC are reporting a win for Tiny Tayyib with 54% yes to 46% no...

Wonder what it'd have been with a free press, impartial media coverage and no intimidation...

"Opponents have attacked a decision to accept unstamped ballot papers as valid unless proven otherwise.

Three people were shot dead near a polling station in the south-eastern province of Diyarbakir, reportedly during a dispute over how they were voting."

Put claims over improperly assigned hotel expenses into perspective a bit.

I am sure the turks know all of this. They will of course know certain websites are blocked and certain politicians are being jailed. They will know all the things you know about Erdogan and if they are not happy with this situation (i certainly would'nt be) then they will vote accordingly.

One thing I learnt from the coup is that the Turkish are no shrinking violets and will not be led by the nose by anyone.

For whatever reason they seem to like Erdogan. I guess people like strong men. Look at how Trump has suddenly become Presidential now he is blasting people into smithereens. Putin is another maniac that is popular.

They still wouldn't be an EU member state by 2060.

With about 97% of ballots counted, "Yes" was on about 51.4% and "No" on about 48.6%.

    It's close...

    That's from the BBC report.

Out of interest, why the concern about Turkish politics?

Studied Byzantine history at uni ... and generally interested in other countries politics as well as our own.

Also an interesting case study in the dangers presented by populist politicians to democratic structures.

Plus only we westerners refer to it as the Byzantine Empire. It was/is still referred to as the Roman Empire, and its people the Romans in the Eastern med. / middle east.

Ah excellent... Deputy PM on C4 news is saying people shouldn't be protesting the results...

And Erdogan thinks electoral monitors should know their place.

This democracy and freedom thing is so confusing.

I don't think people in Western Europe have any idea of the debt we owe to the Byzantine Empire. Or Eastern Roman Empire.

Well Tayyib brought the USA a gift on his recent visit... a taste of how to handle peaceful protesters...

How dare they criticise tiny Tayyib!
