Pads and tampons are "a luxury item", dontcha know.
Well let's see how buses, trains, restaurants and offices like women sitting on their upholstery with blood dribbling down their legs. Or maybe we could just boil a few rags or fold some bogroll up and stuff it in our knickers.

What the EU wants the EU gets. And the EU wants you to pay 5%. Sorry.

I will write to my MP also. Today it's tampons, tomorrow it will be toilet roll.

Can't the category of 'non essential luxury goods' just be changed?

    Not always
I gather from another site that there are moves to challenge the VAT on particular sanitary items in the European Court
    That could ruin their cornflakes

It was reduced from 17.5% (full rate for 27 years) to 5% in 2000 and now 15 years later the 5% is a headline issue. Why is that?

Wouldn't you possibly concede that it might just be a little sexist Bobby?

    Oops:oops:

I don't think so. Is there a tax-fee equivalent for men?

  10. emilystrange

    emilystrange Star commenter

what do men actually need as an essential item? nothing at all.
it's being looked at now because finally people are listening and agreeing that it's NOT fair for women to be taxed on something they use purely because they are women. if there was a male equivalent, then naturally that shouldn't be taxed either.

I wasn't aware that men bled copiously from their genitals for several days each month for upwards of 40 years.

Why do men have to pay VAT (at 20%) on ties?

Is there an equivalent bodily function that occurs only in men and requires special products in order to be managed in a sanitary and hygenic manner?

No. Hence why the tax is not sexist.

so you're ok with taxing women just for being women.

Or you could go at it from the other direction and say that there are no men-only essential hygiene products that are subject to VAT, while there are women-only essential products that are. Hence it is sexist.

I think it's excellent to Tax women. As a man this will save me ooodles of dosh.

We could take make-up! And hair products! And cute things like kittens or mugs with pink on. Cath Kitson products could be taxed at 25%. Or 250% for all I care!

Ah yes, heels could have a tax too. I'm warming to this now... hang on, why is the wife hitting me! Ouch ow oi stop that...
