Taking a screen capture

For some reason, I don't appear to be able to take a print screen on my PC. I've tried several times tonight but to no avail, yet it is something I've done many times before (unlike many other operations, IT is not my forte).

When I press the Print Scrn key, I get the following message: "a screenshot was added to your dropbox", but when I try to copy it onto a blank Word doc (Ctrl + V), nothing happens. I'm now doubting myself: is this the correct way to do it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Open up the Dropbox App
    go to Preferences
and turn off "Save screenshots to Dropbox"

Alternatively use the Snipping Tool in Windows. More flexible as you can capture either the whole screen on any rectangle within it - means less editing after taking the screenshot. You should find it in the Accessories item in the Start menu.

    Thanks madcat and Skeoch.

@ Skeoch. Thanks, I'll try to use Snipping Tool tomorrow.

@ madcat. I can't see the function “Save screenshots to Dropbox“ under Preferences, maybe it’s because I have DropBox basic (apparently). What I don’t understand is that Print Scrn worked fine, for years, up to very recently.

This is what I’ve got under Preferences (anything I could use in there to solve my problem?) =>

    • Click on the Dropbox icon in the bar at the bottom of the screen
    • Click on the "gear" icon top right in the window that appears
    • Click on the Import tab
    • then un-tick "Share screenshots using drop box"
You've probably accidentally clicked on O.K. when Dropbox offered this option at some time

Brilliant, it worked! Thanks a lot madcat! (and Skeoch as well of course, will try this Snipping Tool too).
