Switching to teaching Maths

Discussion in 'Mathematics' started by creppin, Jun 7, 2011.

  1. Hey guys, I have a feeling that I will be visiting this part of the forum quite a bit in the next few months!
I am making the switch to teaching Maths from September. I am/was an SSCo and PE teacher, however with the budget cuts, I went 75% through the redundancy process by having my contract reduced to 0.4. However, at the last minute I secured a Maths post at my current school. So as of September I will be teaching 0.6 maths along with 0.4 PE.

Long term career wise I can see far more opportunities in the Maths side of things than the PE (which is hugely over saturated!).

I am nervous but very, very excited about the challange ahead and cannot wait to get started. I was just wondering if there was any advice on here re: courses for non maths specialists ( I want to improve my subject knowledge so that no pupil is at a disadvantage having me as their teacher!) or any other general advice for someone switching from a subject like PE to Maths!

    Thanks in anticipation,
    Creppin
