supporting pupils with EAL within the classroom

  1. If you can, pre-teach key words and glossary terms before a topic/lesson. Use lots of pictures, useful ones that actually show actions, pair them with good English speakers, model every activity to show them exactly what is expected of them, keep them challenged, give lots of reading practice in lessons, talk alot about ideas and concepts and get other pupils to help explain ideas too. Just a few ideas to get you started really, hope it helps.
  2. Brilliant, thanks for this. Some really good pointers, some of which i am doing but this just confirms it as good practice. Have an enjoyable half term.
  3. There are some brillant resources out there to help. I like instant display, teachers pet, sen teacher and mrs pancake. They have free picture with words resources. Also remember what is good practice for them is best practice for everyone.
