Supporting evidence for Ill Health Retirement

    hello,

I wondered if anyone had successfully been awarded Ill Health Retirement and if they would be willing to share an example of a consultant or gp letter? I completely understand this is very personal evidence and these bits could be hidden but I would be so grateful! I’m trying to gather my evidence but no clue as to what a good gp/ consultant letter should actually look like. And to have an example to use and show my gp/ consultant would be a real help. I just want to try and get it right as the process sounds horrendous and really difficult to be awarded!

Hi, I'm in the process of applying with support from my union who supplied additional information/ guidance on structure and content for GPs and specialists. They have also proof read the reports and with permission of GP I have just returned the forms with some their suggestions for possible rewording/clarification. I am now waiting to hear from GP with regards to whether they are happy to add those amendments! Long winded but hopefully will be successful.

Fingers crossed they make the changes and it’s all straight forward! But it takes time and a lot of patience to keep going with all the paperwork.... I hope it’s quick too! How long has it been since you started the application?

Hi I had my app in just before xmas and notified end of jan that I was unsuccessful. Still regathering depth of reports required whilst union scrutinise everything! Hopefully resubmit, backdated to Jan, within next few weeks. Definitely a long process for me but am only late 40s and whole process slightly rushed due to be dismissed due to illness whilst still on full pay! Good luck to you .

My occ health are collecting evidence from gp and specialist and basing his report on it is that normal ?

This is perfectly normal. The OH doctor has to complete the IHR medical form and comment on your diagnosis, treatment, fitness to teach, fitness to work and likelihood of any successful intervention before retirement age. If they don’t seek medical evidence to back this up, the application is not going to be successful. They cannot go simply on what you tell them.

This is a link to the IHR medical form. Part B is the medical professional’s part. This is, ohter than under exceptional circumstances, completed by an OH doctor for in service applications. Questions 11 and 12 specifically request the professional to summarise the relevant medical evidence. (Hope the link works)

    Hi
Who sends the forms off? At what stage do I send to lea for approval?

Do you have contact with an HR representative at your LEA who is handling your application? They are probably the best person to ask.

My HR representative collated all the paperwork. I completed my forms along with my supporting statement and evidence. I then passed it all to her. My school sent their forms to her as well. HR initiated the consultation with the HR doctor who completed the part B form and sent it directly to her. When she had everything, she scanned it all in and emailed me a copy before sending it to TPS by recorded delivery.

In total it took about five weeks from my HT making the initial enquiry to HR to the paperwork being ready to send off, but it was a relatively straightforward application.

I have been absent with ill health since the start of the year. How do you get to the point of applying for ill health retirement? I spoke with Pensions and they said you have to be off for at least a year but my school is already talking about dismissal.
    Too much stress!

Have you spoken to your union? I also had advice from Wesleyan 're pension. I am currently in the process of applying.

I resigned before having a prolonged period off, although I had had a few separate weeks off. I was fortunately in a financial position to be able to do so.

It was another 6 months before I applied for, and was awarded, ill health retirement.

Yes, I agree with this. Ill health retirement is awarded on the basis of medical evidence and opinion on fitness to teach, regardless of sickness absence. I was awarded it within 3 months of being signed off and I was still on full pay at the time.

So been waiting for forms from occ health and it turns out they were waiting for me to send them my part a and their part b which they will then complete and return to school who in turn will pass to me, I explained i already have schools completed form and need their form but they insist as school asked for the report they have to send to them. Just hope their report is sufficient after all this
