Support for Spelling help

  1. Hello,
    I'm moving to Y5/6 next year after a few years in KS1 and haven't yet taught using the 'Support for Spelling' materials. My Deputy is keen for me to use it and from reading the folder, I think it should be really useful.
    I have googled and googled but have not found much in terms of other people's planning - I just want to see how others sort it out!
    I am going to start by looking at Y5 term 1 so if anyone has any examples of planning or resources I could look at I would be really grateful.

    I worked in Year 5 for a summer term and used this book in conjunction with Support for Spelling:
    I used the IWB pages to introduce the rule and either completed some of the worksheets in class or set them as h/work. I also created wordsearches, anagrams and exercises for h/work activities to include other words that fitted the rule of the week but were not in the list to learn.
    I don't have any planning to share, but I did upload all of the weekly lists I created for the summer term here:

    In addition I have uploaded a more general KS2 set of spelling lists - these might give you some ideas if you are looking for words for a particular rule.

    I'd found the devon and primary resources sites too - it just suprises me that there isn't more out there, especially examples of planning. Maybe people aren't really using it, or are not planning it separately from thir literacy lessons.

  6. I've brought my copy of support for spelling home as I haven't taught spelling very much this year and want to do it better next year. I wouldn't have a separate plan though, it would be part of my English plan. My aim would be to do 5 mins (I'd like to say every day but I know that won't happen) 2/3 times a week and a longer session (maybe a whole lesson) every two weeks. And also have a spelling of the moment display board as part of my working wall (with previous ones left up somewhere to refer back to).

    I really like the exemplar plan in the folder so was going to attempt to do one of those and then refer to it in my weekly plans. I feel it will make sure I covef everything and not forget about it half way through the term. :)
  8. I've used the Support for Spellings resource book for the last couple of years. Why create work for yourself? All the planning is in the book. Each week I outline what I'm doing in the spelling sessions for each day - ref the file. This means an outline ie one/two sentences. If they need more work on something, then I'll just note that down and do that in the next session. There are loads of good activities in the file.
    During literacy sessions, I might have a session using some of the rules so would also recap that way but we do the spelling in daily sessions of 20 minutes.
