Supply teacher support!

    Hey everyone,

    Are there any daily supply teachers in the same boat as me? With no statutory sick pay and no work on offer, what are you doing to help yourselves financially?

    My friend is a supply teacher and she has written to her MP. I would advise anyone who is not covered by the '80% of employees wages' offer to do the same. I don't really understand why a) the offer was not made to anyone who normally works but is not able to do so - surely previous 3 months salary or similar could have been used to estimate the loss of income, and b) why a cap has not been put on to the 80% offer. For a couple both earning six figure salaries, the tax payer could end up paying several months worth of a £160K / pa to a single household at a time when some people - like you - have no income at all, and when tax receipts are going to be extremely low and the entire economy will take a hell of a battering. I'm not convinced that funding future skiing holidays for the rich should be our main priority....especially when that kind of jet-setting is largely responsible for the rapid spread of the problem in the first place.

    I am and it's scary. I am an experienced DT teacher who left profession a few years ago to work back in engineering. In December I was made redundant but got back into supply teaching doing general cover. I had been contemplating a return to teaching and was pleased to pick up regular work getting 4 days out of 5 on average. I was also applying for full time posts and doing some subject knowledge enhancement training in Maths and was feeling confident I would get through this.

    I had also just found a school I really liked and it seemed that they were about to offer a long term supply position after Easter to cover maternity leave in my subject specialism. Then schools closed and now I have no income for now and the forseable future. T make this harder my wife only works part time and there is no way we can live on her income. Me not working means we have a shortage of about £1500 per month. Savings are very limited as we just got married last year (2nd time around for us both) and although now living in her house which is paid for I still have a flat for sale and there is no interest in it. I am still paying mortgage, council tax, service charges and bills of about £800 per month for a place I am not living in.

    The whole situation is awful, worrying and unbelievable.

    Like a number of supply teachers here, I am deciding to quit the profession altogether to stack shelves in Tesco. Better pay and morale. The treatment towards supply teachers who have worked off their socks trying to maintain high standards , often covering the classes the main teachers can't handle is one of contempt by all parties in this crisis. No support from schools, unions and Government. The teaching unions are quick to slander umbrella companies but to be fair these could be the life saver for some - Whether or not supply teachers may qualify for 'furlong', at least AZEBRA (my payroll provider) are trying to help find some clarification. It will be a different situation come September when schools are crying out for cover teachers, especially that interviews for job roles, new QTS posts, etc will be unfilled.due to school closures.
    The only advice I can give to others in this situation is apply for Universal Credit as you are allowed to claim if working a zero hour contract as well as JSA. Very annoying for permanent teaching staff to whinge about working over Easter, many would love to be in their shoes right now.

    For those who were self employed, although I advised against doing this to many, it might now have been the best route in terms of getting money now- well in June.

    If you are employed on PAYE shouldn't your agency be able to claim for you?

    If you put the question into the internet,you should find various answers between £7.00 /£10.00 per hour. Looks like night work,but there may day work,withe current demand.

    Sadly I think this only refers to people on both PAYE and being kept in the job related to it.

    As supply teachers there is no actual job contract, more the promise of a service that may or may not offer you some work.

    But you are right in that this could be the only area of hope left for supply teachers and the government is being asked to adjust this as so many are on zero hours contracts.

    If you want to work for Tesco then try to do so now.

    Their application process is slow and arduous but for the temporary jobs they are removing this awful scenario test they have - which even Tesco workers say they would fail (as it is changed often).

    Apparently most people do fail and it is blatantly obvious why. They ask you all the questions a half decent management should cover in training AFTER you are employed.

    Incredible amount of management for the sake of it **** for a position to stack shelves. (Hence why teachers should be able to deal with it so easily :p)

    Yes I feel totally abandoned and let down
    We are a professional group of people that provide a specialist service with let’s face it minimal benefits
    Many of us have children who now can’t be left at home whilst we do other full time work in warehouses or supermarkets
    I used supply to make up income from my 2 day a week teaching role in a special school
    Can’t claim unemployment as I do the 2 days can’t claim universal credit as partner works I will be writing to my MP
    I feel to like I will need to completely re think future employment as thus is how we have been treated can someone start a petition maybe something Facebook group maybe

    Had an email this morning from the MD of my agency. They are pursuing the Government and looking closely at anything they are producing. They say that if you are still on assignment or are still being paid for a long term placement it in unlikely you will qualify for Government relief. They will continue to kjeep us updated as things go on. I am currently on a half day per week Key workers' kids cover so looks like I won't get anything.
