    Good suggestions above.
Don't know if there are suitable children's versions, but what about HG Wells the Time Machine or war of the Worlds or Jules Verne Around the World in 80 days (could compare with children's cartoon series)?
  3. Black Beauty?
  4. On the E Nesbitt theme, a good choice would be her first children's novel, the Story of the Treasure Seekers, published in 1898, as it captures a lot of detail of the lives of middle-class London children at the end of the 19th century. Their various attempts at increasing their family's fortunes may provide a number of topics for discussion.
If you are looking for something early in the Victorian age, I am not sure what to advise for Y5, as books written specifically for children seem more of a feature of the end of the Victorian era.
