Subject Leadership or Year Leadership?

Discussion in 'Mathematics' started by Kenyonmaths, Aug 30, 2011.

  1. Hi
I am considering going for a Second in Department role (KS4 Manager) in Maths or a Head of Year job. In the current climate of non-teachers taking over head of year jobs, do you think there is much point going down the pastoral route as it may damage future prospects in school leadership?
I am confused!!! Some schools have pupil progress leaders (qualified teachers) and others don't!! Can anyone help?
    Any advice welcome :)

  2. I think you should go for the role to which you feel most drawn. Managing KS4 Maths is a vital role in any school and very focussed on exam results, intervention etc. Head of Year is pastoral, not subject specific supporting and developing child centred learning. Either is a strong career move - which are you most passionate about?
