Suggest a line of enquiry and the strategy needed to follow it; collect,
organise and interpret selected information to find answers

I can think of a question to ask about some information and organise the
information to help me find out more about it

answer a question by identifying what data to collect; organise, present,
analyse and interpret the data in tables, diagrams, tally charts, pictograms
and bar charts, using ICT where appropriate
I cant think of an appropriate LO for this. So on the first day (I dont think I will need to go over what a picto, bar chart etc is) I want them to think of a question and how they might collect it- could LO be - to plan and pursue an enquiry?
Although on the 2nd lesson I may well have an ob so any inspirational ideas please feel free to tell!
    Thank youxxx

  3. I must admit, I wouldn't generally start the unit with the Applying objective. Why wouldn't you go over bar charts, pictograms, Venn diagrams, Carroll diagrams - would you not want to review it, even if they are very able. I also do some measure within this unit and generally start with this.
Smarties are always quite good for the data handling bit. I end with the enquiry. Depending on what you're doing in Literacy or Geography you could always tie it in with this and use a questionnaire for the whole school. I've always split the children into groups and each group took a class (judiciously chosen). The children choose the enquiry and write the questionnaire.

  4. Yeh I was thinking of mixing it up a bit. I am just findnig it hard to apply ' suitable' LO. I didnt know whether to do letting them pick their own enquiry or giving it them, its kind of a 1 and ahalf lesson. I might start with capacity- although I got told off for by doing estimating and measuring in 1 lesson. Our topic will be recycling so could do something linked to that. Thank you for your reply. xxxx

  5. HOw about a traffic survey?
Ask the children to come up with questions concerning the traffic - e.g how many coloured cars go past school?
What time is the road busiest?
Who drives most men or women? etc
Actually go and survey traffic then.
Does your school have hot school meals? Can the children choose what they have each day? Send children off at lunch time to ask what people have had for their dinner even if you have packed lunches they could ask what type of sandwiches do they have? how many items etc.

This will give you lots of data to create graphs and diagrams from rather than the chidlren just asking who like what crisps? who has a pet? etc
