Strange incident with police car

    Hi
I had a really odd experience driving this evening and have been puzzling over it.
I was driving along a duel carriageway when I noticed blue lights quite a way behind me and so I pulled into the inside lane and stayed there when I realised that not one but several police traffic cars were going along. I assumed there must have been a bad accident.
After they had all passed, I pulled into the outside lane because I was behind three coaches which were all travelling quite slowly. After I overtook them, I went back into the inside lane and I was directly in front of yet another police car!
I then had a horrible shock as the police car started flashing its blue lights, since if it had wanted to overtake it would have just moved into the outside lane I thought it wanted me to pull over and I panicked as I didn't know what I had done wrong. The worst thing was there wasn't anywhere I could pull over, as there was no hard shoulder for the forseeable distance but it just kept flashing its blue lights. So after a while (maybe a minute but it felt like to much longer!) I slowed right down, almost stopping, to see what it wanted - and it overtook me!
I then had angry coaches flashing their lights but I don't know what I should have done.
Does anybody know why the police car had its siren and lights on but wasn't overtaking? I was really shocked and shaky.
    Thanks.

You have to expect a certain amount of confrontation on a duel carriageway

I've been pulled over twice in the last couple of months...once for an expired mot (I forgot all about it) and the second time because I was driving my brother in law's car while he fixed mine (for the mot) and he has trade insurance but the car showed up on the police computer as uninsured.

  5. Perhaps Gaddafi has booked a Shearings "Tour the Lake District " holiday for a fortnight ... until the heat dies down.

Were the police cars escorting the coaches somewhere (to or from a football match?) and you somehow ended up in the middle of their convoy?

Was it police escorting football supporters coaches? Just a thought.

I don't think so, as I overtook the three coaches and then the police car as well so I wasn't actually coming between them. It was when I signalled and went in front of the police car that the lights and siren went on.
Serendipity I assumed I was being pulled over for something (I thought it was possibly the mirror on my passenger side which got knocked and needs replacing) but when I pulled over they just overtook me and sped off down the carriageway. It was just so strange and really frightened me.

    Snap, dereck!

  11. I recently received an email which said that you should pull up somewhere public like a service station if a car with flashing blue lights follows you. Dial 112 (?) to advise police that is what you are doing and they can tell you if police car is genuine. Of course, if it is genuine, you might be done for using your mobile phone whilst driving!!

  12. 112? That is the alternate 999 number.....I don't think they would take to kindly to random calls about police cars!

    this one Kinsa?

maybe the police just wanted to get back for a cuppa.

Maybe they had had a radio message at the same time as you pulled in front of them and so were off to fight crime and restore justice?

It was definitely a police car.
The point was it was impossible to pull over safely as there was no hard shoulder on a fast moving carriageway, but when I slowed right down with my hazard lights on as I was being signalled to stop, it seemed they didn't want me to stop at all as they then overtook me.
So why did they start flashing their blue lights?

Yes but they could have just overtaken me then! As I was in the inside lane, but they kept the lights flashing for a while before doing so! I just can't make sense of it.

The assumption that police drivers are more expert is flawed. I once complained about a police car driving up my back bumper for some miles along a busy motorway (I was driving at 70).

    I remember that!

Were you perhaps driving too slowly?

No, I was driving at the speed limit on a very unbusy motorway.

Only when they started flashing me to pull over. That's the part I don't understand. Surely if a police car is behind you and has the option to overtake but is flashing blue lights they mean they want you to pull over? It was just very odd and the more I think about it the more cross I feel. It was quite scary and caused me to panic and try to stop.

I complained, Badgergirl. I left the motorway and the police car followed me. He pulled up at the traffic lights beside me so I got a good look, then memorised the registration number. I got a full apology. It was quite scary - couldn't believe it when I realised it was a police car.
