Stopping school being used as polling station

Discussion in 'Governors' started by egeake, Jan 25, 2011.

  1. Our school is used as a polling station, and we don't particularly like it, as it closes the whole school for a day. We've told the relevant part of the council that we want them to find an alternative but have just heard that we have no choice for the May elections. Has anyone got any experience of persuading a council to find another venue?
    Thanks!

Ouch >.< Doesn't seem a very community spirited. Is it really that detrimental to allow staff and students a day off in order to allow people to exercise their democratic right in a convenient location?

Returning Officers have a statutory power to use your school and they don't like to change them without good reason as local people get used to going to the same place to vote. I doubt you'll persuade them otherwise. You could see if it's possible to lock off the area used as a Polling Station from the rest of the school. If you can and the Polling Station area is self contained with its own separate street entrance and toilets you'll be allowed to use the rest of the school.

Staff shouldn't get the day off when a school is used as a Polling Station - it's not an extra holiday for them!. They are still supposed to work. If they can't come into the school they should work from home.

  5. Thanks for these very helpful responses. The school can't be partitioned unfortunately. I was hoping the council might be able to hire a portakabin for the day - I think there is a chance the parents would club together to pay for it!
