Specialist PMFL practitioner

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by slb09, Apr 3, 2012.

  1. I am looking to move from being a general primary practitioner into specialising in Primary Modern Foreign Language teaching.
As the future for primary language teaching is currently "on hold", it is probably not the best time to be doing this but its where my passion lies and where I really want to be!
I have a BA Hons in German, French A level and a PGCE qualification with curriculum specialisation in Primary MFL (German). Having 7 years teaching experience across KS2 and additional curriculum responsibility for PMFL for 4 of those years, I am now looking to specialise in language teaching, be it teaching languages during PPA cover time or as a language specialist teacher in either the independent sector or the state sector.
Does anyone have any advice on how I best go applying for jobs, approaching schools etc?

As a fellow MFLer (also a German specialist, but alos have French & Spanish), who did try using my specialism in PMFL' over the past 6-7 years I have to say it has not been a success. But take this as just one person's experience, which may not be representative across the country.
The people who have been most successful were colleagues teaching in Secondary, who were asked to support Primaries in delivering the PMFL requirement. Unfortunately many of these colleagues have now been sidelined and are now redundant, as teachers become more confident at delivering languages 'in house' and of course PMFL is still not statutory and with all the pressures of the Primary curriculum many schools see it as less of a priority.
I had hoped that being able to offer languages (and a choice of 3) would help me get back into a permanent post, but this has not proved to be the case. Generally I would say there are very few opportiunities to 'teach PMFL' in PPA time and in 10 years I have only ever seen one post advertised which asked for this. As a rule PPA covers are not advertised but tend to be offered to people already in contact with a school, such as those going in on supply.
Perhaps others may have better hope for you.
