Special Measures and NQTs

Discussion in 'NQTs and new teachers' started by Phil87, Sep 9, 2012.

  1. I know that schools in special measures aren't able to take on NQTs, but what happens if you are doing your NQT year in a school and it goes into special measures while you are there?
Always wondered, never found the answer, now a real possibility.

Usually the HMI provide special dispensation in order for the school to continue or complete the GTP. I have also known staff to transfer to another school where there were extreme circumstances.

The statutory guidance states that if the NQT is already in the school when it goes into special measures they can continue to serve induction there, the school just can't recruit any new NQTs without, as M'Learned Friend notes above, special dispensation from HMI. The same applies to someone employed by the school on an EBR like the GTP; they can continue to train at the school, and go on to their NQT year there, provided they were employed before the school went into the category.
