Well, this is seriously quite cool. Reports are coming in that a number of amateur astronomers have spotted an asteroid or comet slamming into Jupiter. If confirmed, this would be one of only a handful of recorded impacts ever on the gas giant.

Details are few and far between at the moment. What we know so far, from videos published online, is that there was a rapid brightening on the limb of Jupiter, which likely came from an impact.

John McKeon, one of the astronomers, wrote on Reddit under the username bubbleweed: “Exact time was 00:18:45 UT [on March 17]. If anyone was shooting Jupiter at that time, I recommend looking back through your videos.”

Obviously for 'just' I mean 12 days ago before anyone points that out.

It's truly mind-boggling that an event taking place so very far away can be captured so clearly on film. Literally awesome.

I'm going for "other" Lanokia simply because two choices are probable/possible and one, whilst extremely unlikely, would be far more interesting.

From the few images around it seems unlikely that, whatever it was, it will have survived the experience

Yeah... it's doubtful it will have gone very deep into the planet...

Burned up in what passes for Jupiter's upper atmosphere.

I voted 'other'. I think it's migrants taking a cunning detour to make it to the EU to get passports to sponge off the UK! They'll stop at nothing to make it here.

    Sorry, I meant 'refugees'.

Nicky Morgan appears to be on another planet - maybe the explosion was her brain overloading?

No telescope big enough has been created to spot that one...

Like God, I suspect it requires faith.

That's darn good going- it took each of the Voyagers 11-12 years to get there and they were rocket powered.

You mean something came out of Jupiter?

And it could be coming this way!
