Simple Year 7 Biology Demos

    I have an interview for PGCE in Secondary Science and I have been asked to plan an hour lesson for a year 7 class in any area.
    I will have to make a short presentation on the lesson plan and im hoing to do a really simple demo just so that the audience can be slightly engaged but i need some ideas.. Please Help :)

    I did have a good demo on blood but am i right in thinkin this isnt covered in year 7

    I was thinking maybe something around the topic 7F - Simple Chemical Reactions. This topic is really good for chemistry demonstrations.
    e.g. - potassium & water, magnesium & acid
    Only thing about the blood thing, it does not really fit into to any Y7 science units.
    Unless you fit it into Cells?

    Yeah I did have a similar demo for that module a alka seltzer,water and oil lava lamp, also have a few ideas for 7K but as my specialism is Biology i wanted to do something Bio espc as if they quiz me on the lesson plan ill be more confident answering bio ques
     
  5. Make an animal and a plant cell model using sweets, peas etc.
    If students co operative, then in the main activity get them to be an animal cell and then a plant cell.

    How about a model using jelly for cytoplasm, malteaser for nucleous, green smarties for chloroplast and setting them in square/rectangular containers.
    I only have to present them my plan not teach the lesson so mayb i cud make them the night before and then take them as an example of what we would make in the lesson

    A good square container is a ferraro rocher box. I've done this, it works really well, although you should pick the sweets you use with care - the jelly tends to be a bit warm and so the sweets will dissolve (a bit), also, don't forget that cells need a cell membrane too - freezer bag maybe?

    You could build a model of a human digestive system - is this still part of the curriculum for Yr7?-
    Start with a cheese and tomato sandwich then process it as follows
    knife+ chopping board then a pestle and mortar for teeth. Add a squirt of detergent for saliva.
    squeeze it down a plastic tube for the oesophogus into a
    plastic bag for the stomach. As you churn it, add a small amount of ethanoic acid for smell and to represent the gastric juices,
    into a mixing bowl for the duodenum and add food colourings for enzymes, then into a seive so the 'soluble' products of digestion can be absorbed and finally
    into the leg of a pair of tights with the toe cut off, squeeze it down slowly removing any spare water, before at the end a small, brown Richard the Third plops out into another mixing bowl.

    This activity can be done as a pure demo, but also allows you to include pupils at various points of the process. Make up a word find to start, and a worksheet to fill in and there's your lesson.
    Alternatively and empty coffees tin imploding to help teach SLG is kind of cool.
    Mind you, I'm always a little cautious of schools that don't want you to teach a lesson to their Yr 7.. what's wrong with their Yr 7 that means prospective employees shouldn't be exposed to them? There may be an innocent explanation. Make sure when you visit the school to find an excuse and see what the loos are like...

    The best lesson I think I taught as a PGCE student was making your own indicator from Geranium Petals. Really simple, just grind Geranium petals in a mortar and pestle with alcohol. Then show what happens when the indicator is added to an acid and an alkali. I can still hear the children going oooh when the indicator goes bright green and bright orange. Anyway, the idea of showing them this is so that they will carry out the experiment themselves.
    Another lesson I taught with year 7 that had more of a biology theme was observing pond life using microscopes. Demo could be showing this using a camera connected to the microscope before they do this themselves. The children were totally absorbed in this lesson. I found a good website and had this on the IWB so they could identify the creatures they saw.

    I asked the year 7 at Christmas which were the experiments they enjoyed and these were all in the top ten!
