Simon Cowell "broken back"

I hope he is ok. "broken back" can mean a chipped bone that heals in 2 weeks, or nerve damage which paralyses.

    He fell off his bike.

This is a bit of a worry to those of us trying to learn to cycle

It was an electric bike and he may have been going too fast.

But I wish him well regardless.

I've only come off my bike once this Summer when a suicidal cat ran out in front of me and I had to fall off to avoid a collision.

He had 6 hour surgery and a rod inserted.

If the rod was inserted in the wrong place he might have another problem.

Even more worrying for those learning to unicycle!

In the UK electric bikes are restricted to 15mph when using the electric part.
Most cyclists go faster than this downhill and many go faster on the flat. Given Simon Cowell was apparently 'in the courtyard of his Malibu home' it is unlikely he was going particularly fast.
And given he is back tweeting today, it doesn't sound like a desperate situation.

However, he is a 60 year old man who acknowledges he hadn't read the manual etc before getting on!
People who use electric bikes sensibly need not be worried.

I've cycled about 200 miles in the fortnight that I've had mine and come nowhere near falling off at any point. But then again, I tried out several before buying and used it carefully and sensibly to gain confidence. And I'm not a tall, fairly large, 60 year old.

I think in the US the restriction is 20 mph. If it was a trail bike though, as reported, he may have been more ambitious in his cycling technique than most of us would be.

Maybe but in the courtyard of his home...so showing off?

Is he the type to show off though? :D

Should have got a quad bike instead.

I've heard of horrendous injuries from crashing on those

    It was a joke.
    Courtyard=quad.

Although obviously Simon Cowell coming a cropper on an electric bike on a private residence in Malibu is no laughing matter.
