But phonetic decoding is the way reading is taught and so these children have difficulty reading. Furthermore, Sally Shaywitz has shown that dyslexics have an abnormal response in the brain system for phonetic decoding, indicating a physical brain disability. The remediation strategy used by the Education Establishment is simple. That is to fix the brain dysfunction or teach phonetic decoding anyway. This is equivalent to remediating the blind by making the light brighter. They teach the deaf to read without phonetic decoding. Why not the dyslexic?
