Shore crabs appearing in a garden

Does anyone have any suggestions why I have found, over the last two weeks, four shore crabs (at least that's what I think they are) in our London garden? Two of them were originally alive but now they are all dead.

How did they get there? (The garden is not that far from the River Thames, perhaps 500 yards, but it is all built up and there are busy roads in between.)

Do I have to worry about a Biblical plague?

And what should I do with the bodies? So far I have left them to the flies and ants (birds do not seem to be interested and there may not have been any foxes in since they appeared) and have not removed them out of curiosity, but am I attracting rats by letting them decompose?

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

Throw the corpses in the bin. Decomposing crabs are very stinky.

If you have crabs on your rocks I suggest a visit to the STI clinic.

You will need to supply some more claws before we can solve that one.

Do you have fishmonger near you that sells live crabs? Maybe they escaped from there.

The Stalag Luft III Fishmongers in Bermondsey would be a prime candidate there I reckon.

We had African Land Snails in our garden when we lived in South East London. There used to be an West African shop in Lewisham where they kept them in cardboard boxes. They are edible apparently. I doubt if any escaped ones survived the winter.

One of them slithering through your lettuces would give you apoplexy!

Thank you all for your replies - no convincing hypothesis among them in my opinion. I'll let you know if this turns into something bigger.

I'm trying to imagine how hungry I'd have to be. And also how you'd slaughter it. And what you'd do with that yellow pus-like stuff...
