Shakespeare-inspired music!

Discussion in 'Music' started by DevonAtHeart, Jan 24, 2011.

  1. Hi all,
I'm putting on a Shakespeare themed 'evening' (scenes and musical offerings) at the end of this term, and have got heaps of stuff for solo singers, choir, orchestra, small ensembles etc, but not a lot - in fact none - for solo instrumentalists.
I've got some fantastic players and they're always keen to perform solos (and it's good experience), so I don't want to leave them out.
Does anyone know of any decent and reasonably challenging (Grade 5-8+) music for solo instruments that
    a) has been 'inspired' by Shakespeare, his plays or their characters written.
    or
    b) was written for one of his plays or film/operatic versions of them
    or
    c) was written at the time of Shakespeare (or thereabouts)
    or
    d) been inspired by music written at the time of Shakespeare (or by other contemporary events)..! (clutching at straws there a bit, but I've got Britten's courtly dances from Gloriana in mind.)

Preferably oboe or clarinet, but suggestions for any instruments welcome!
    Thanks!

Can I suggest a trawl through the June Emerson website - tons of stuff there from a woodwind specialist. Hope it all goes well.

  4. Thanks - what a useful website.
