Setting up GCSE Dance HELP!!!

Discussion in 'Drama and performing arts' started by lerwilliams84, Jan 4, 2012.

  1. I have been teaching PE for 6 years now and taught Dance within the PE currciculum and really enjoyed it. I have just started a new school, where Dance is only taught at Year 9 for a 3 week block! The students are so talented and put on Dance performances every year which are outstanding and have no teacher support as the school does not have any dance specialists.
This is an area that I feel I would like to developin the school as i think it would benefit the students and school enormously. I have taken my idea to either set up GCSE Dance or Btec Dance to my Head of faculty and he is extremly keen and has said he will support me all the way.
Problem is where do I start? Which is better? GCSE or Btec? Ive had a look into both but am still slightly baffled by it all to be honest. I think my HoF would prefer me to deliever GCSE. Does anyone have any advice on which they think is better but more importantly how do you set up a course from scratch???
Any help would be really appreciated...
    Many Thanks

  3. I think at the very least you need this DVD.

  4. hi - it really depends on the KS3 experience of your students. BTEC works well for dancing school trained students, or those hooked into street style but it is very open. GCSE is pretty rigorous and very contemporary based although the prescribed works that you can choose from have a wide range of styles at the moment. That may be the first place to start. If you look up the AQA spec and find the works for GCSE, youtube them and have a look because you will have to base your course around 2 of these minimum.
