Secondary School Supply Teaching Resource Idea's

Discussion in 'Supply teaching' started by lorna_161, Feb 12, 2011.

  1. Hi,

Im due to start supply within secondary schools in a few weeks time. I only qualified 6 months ago as an 11-18 Art teacher so I'm new to both teaching and supply.
I was wondering what advice anyone could give me for general things to take with me when on supply, and also very importantly what kind of resources I should take? I've tried looking on the TES resources section, but since its changed it's layout it's hard to find general worksheets suitable for supply work.

Any idea's and suggestions would be welcomed, thanks

Most of the time work and resources are provided for you on 11-18 supply.

Maybe have a few one-off lesson ideas in case there's no work set, or the set work is ****/unworkable. Try to avoid 'design a poster for..' and 'draw your hand' as these are universally despised lessons. I was given one the other day which I quite liked - draw words in a manner that reflects the meaning of the word, ie Fast, Explosion, Water, Angry etc.

I've found a memory stick with teachers.tv and YouTube clips can be handy (assuming you're given a guest login on the school's ICT network). Clips can be copied off YouTube via keepvid.com.

Carry a small disc case of some of your favourite subject-based programmes on DVD too.

An endless supply of pencils is always handy - they can be bought cheaply in bulk from eBay.

Bear in mind you won't always be teaching Art on supply. I very rarely end up covering my most recent specialist subject.
