Science staff meeting

Discussion in 'Primary' started by supersmiley, Jun 2, 2011.

  1. Hi all,
I have been asked to do a science staff meeting on Monday, with a focus on SC1 and was wondering if anyone could help me out!
I was thinking of making it practical for staff e.g. giving them some investigations to do and giving them some sort of roles... but that's as far as my thoughts have gone so far!
Any help/advice on where to take it would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance! :)

What do you want the outcome of the activity to be?
Are the staff short of ideas of investigation tasks? If so, is your aim to give them ideas of what they could do? Only working on one task doesn't increase their repertoire. Perhaps a gathering of ideas and researching for more might be a good task.
Is it more that they need guidance on the different stages that are required eg. Statement of intent, predict, fair test etc. In which case working on one task would thoroughly would show this best. You might discuss a school policy on how an investgation is written up, what frameworks might be used and key vocabulary.
Do you have sufficient equipment to carry out the investigations you all want to do? Perhaps an audit of equipment/resources and location kept would be good and a shopping list of what is needed.
Are all of the staff aware of good websites and IWB activities that can support their teaching - e.g.
    Boardworks http://www.boardworks.co.uk/
    Children's University of Manchester http://www.childrensuniversity.manchester.ac.uk/
    Interact (from Cambridge University) http://www.engineeringinteract.org/interact.htm
There are of course many more.
Perhaps some staff might appreciate time to investigate what is available to suit their needs.
    Hope this helps.

    More thoughts:
What do we already do well in Sc1?
What would we like to improve?

Perhaps make a chart of all the investigations done throughout the school to make sure that there is not an imbalance in the type of investigation work done.
