How many are you expected to do in an academic year?

We aim for three per class a year plus any sporting events that come up.

We're much the same - one per term (three per year), usually linked to current theme, plus sporting events and any cheap or free extra ones that come up.

'Expected'? None at all, though that might raise an eyebrow or two.
Not too many and only ones with a decent educational value.

And the H&S/Risk Assessment people are such a nightmare, that organising a trip to the local Tesco becomes a high risk activity needing 56 pieces of paper and 87 accompanying adults, so few people both to organise anything other than sport any more.

This is going back a good few years but I can remember when school "trips" officially ceased to exist. Only "educational visits" could be sanctioned. (Otherwise, you were giving extra days of holiday to all concerned. Couldn't have that!)
