school refusing to give me a timetable for September as I'll be on maternity leave...

    I have just started my maternity leave. From September I will be employed part-time at my school, for various reasons, the main one being to spend more time with my baby. Obviously I won't go back to work in September, but a bit later in the year, probably January (it all depends on finances!)
    I have requested to know my timetable (not specific classes, but at least the days I'll be working) as I have to confirm childcare arrangements by the end of the summer, but my Head is refusing and says I'll get it closer to my return, as they won't write a timetable for me until then! My hours are going to be covered internally so apparently that's the reason they aren't able to give me a timetable.
    Is this acceptable? As far as I'm aware, despite being on maternity leave I am still an employee of the school so have the same rights than any employee working there in 2011-2012.
    Another thing is that they keep saying how they can't guarantee the number of days I'll be working. All women who have gone part time in the years I've worked at the school have gone down to a specific number of working days (0.4: 2 days, 0.8: 4 days etc), not just hours, but it seems they won't accept that for me and they could make me work 5 days! That's ridiculous as it would make no difference whatsoever to my current situation, and I wouldn't have more time with my baby + would have to pay for extra childcare!
    Are they simply being unreasonable?

    I'm not sure I'll be much help but all I know is that a) schools don't have to grant part-time (even if in the past others have had it granted - it's all about current situation etc.
    That thing about working 5 days - yes, that sounds a real sh*t - but then, in their eyes, someone who works 5 mornings, is effectively only doing 2.5 days, so part-time. Doesn't help you though in the slightest.
    I agree with you for this- you are still an employee, it's just that some employers think out of sight, out of mind.

  3. It has already been agreed... to be perfectly honest I didn't have a choice, it was reduction of hours or redundancy! I wanted to reduce my hours anyway for the sake of Little One I accepted the 0.6 FTE they offered.

  4. That seems rubbish but I know a colleague at work is in the same position; they have told all p/t staff in our school this year that there are no guarantees of whole days anymore. In our dept one has gone back to full time (which they wanted but she didn't) and the other (more experienced) handed in her notice. Sorry to say but I suspect (from my school at least) it is a way for schools to cut generally more experienced (and higher paid) staff in hard times. :(
     
  5. If you are putting LO in nursery reserve a full time place. You will know in time to give them a month's notice. My daughter's nursery told me to do that.
     
  6. It is rubbish, but they can do it. I went part time too and asked for 3 days, was told that this would mean working between something like 40% and 60%, which was bad but did give me three days - otherwise it would have been 60% spread across the week, with unpaid hours trapped between paid hours - I'm afraid that they are allowed to do this (I was so horrified that I checked with the union). I think that lots of schools have tried to accommodate staff returning from maternity leave but with the spending cuts they now need to eke every last penny out of our timetables - this year I ended up teaching 52% over 3 days and 3 subjects - none of them is my specialism. I believe the key phrase is "the same, or like, role"
     
  7. thanks for the replies. The question is still: is it acceptable for the school to REFUSE giving me a timetable for September as I will be on maternity leave (regardless of the issues of the number of working days)? Is this discrimination?
    If they are not going to write my timetable until I come back then of course it will be more difficult to accommodate my days on as few days as possible. In all the years I've worked at the school all women who requested part-time got the number of days they wanted, plus as far as I'm aware they got given a timetable even if they were not present in September.
