School musical

So . . . we're thinking about our end of year production. Traditionally we have had a year 6 'leavers show'. This involved the children creating their own show and singing/dancing/performing various things.

This year, we shall we doing a Y5/6 production. I would like this to be a 'proper' musical.

Has anyone performed one with their school? Do you have any recommendations? There will be 120 children involved (but the year 5 children will only be singing - they'll get the parts next year). I know some are very expensive. Just seeing if anyone had found a cheaper option.

    Cheers

I loved doing this one with Year 5/6:

We chose it because we had been studying the Ancient Greeks, but I think it would be good anyway. It had a fight scene in it (in time with the music), so even the more reluctant boys enjoyed it! We really enjoyed learning the songs.

There are some samples of the songs on the website. Although it does song a lot better with a big crowd of children than the lone voice on the sample track!

Same company as @Miss-Becky - I did Lights, Camera, Action a little while back with a mix of Year 5 and 6. We personalised some of the script to make it relevant to the school and gave the caretaker a starring role! :D

So many options :) Linking to something you're covering in class can be good. Some of the ones the kids and I have loved doing are:

I do the same as @marlin and always try to personalise it/throw in a current song to keep them on their toes. School musicals are what I live for! Happy to chat and offer advice :)

Cheers for the ideas, but we wanted to try for a 'proper' musical this time.

We've done a few performances from some of those sites before. Our old Leavers show used to work great. Child written, pop songs mixed in, bit of this - bit of that, but we wanted to do a bigger 'show' this year.

It seems Joseph is the only real affordable one I could find. Not a bad option.

The only reservation about 'proper' musicals is that there are far more restrictions about performing rights, performance and advertising. Read the terms and conditions very carefully.

We used to write our own productions but I have done (in a Middle School with year 8) Grease (version for middle schools) and Bugsy Malone. In both cases the license required that no changes were made to the script, the music score was quite tricky (I assembled a 'pit' orchestra from our peripatetic teachers with me at the piano), the posters and programmes had to include specific information of a certain size and there was a condition that a person from the licensing group may attend a performance if they wished to check that everything was done correctly (they didn't).

Both shows were a huge success, but I wouldn't recommend Grease for Year 5/6 as the material is not really age appropriate.

I have been producing year 6 leavers shows for years now! Bugsy is a sure winner!

New question - what are the rules on performing 'pop' songs for a performance?

Please have a look/listen at the ones I have written. They were produced by schools at which I was head, and are now published and proving to be popular. 'Samson Power' has even been performed in New York!

I'm happy to e-mail you scripts (no charge!) to read in order that you can evaluate them - you can contact me at info@onemoretime.biz

a previous school put on the musical with the music and story based on "Queen" songs, "We Will rock you" I think.
Year 6, loved the real music and story. Nothing twee or contrived about the words and music here!
Big school with five form entry, so approx 150 pupils in the show.

Will probably be going with We Will Rock You.

    Doesn't seem too expensive.
