    I believe the SBM is school business manager. If that's the case then you can make her the DHT.
    If you want your school to be a business.
    If you want your school to be about learning and teaching, then I'd suggest a qualified teacher would make a more effective deputy.
    Call me old fashioned if you will.
    If I were one of your team I'd be heartily p****ed off if the deputy didn't hold a teaching qualification.

    The School Business Manager on SMT is a good idea. Having them as the deputy head teacher (the clue is in the title) would be a bad idea as you would have a non-teacher running the school in case of absence. A one off day would not be too bad but if you had a long term illness the school would suffer from not having an education specialist in charge.
  3. Assuming by SBM you mean school business manager, many school shave their SBM as *part* of the management team, but not as a replacement for a DHT in my experience.
    A few things that spring immediately to mind are: would this person be observing lessons and commenting on other peoples' teaching as is part of the usual DH's role? Would they be leading performance management cycles? Because being subject to this from someone who I assume is not or has probably never actually been a teacher, I would certainly find this difficult to stomach.
    Has this person completed the leadership courses that DH's are usually expected to attend? Are they able to deputise and run the school, if say you were off on long term sick? Could they take it through an ofsted inspection on their own? Could they teach a class if no cover was available?
    If you advertised the post and interviewed, could you in all honesty say that this person would be the best person fro the role against experienced senior teachers?
    If you havent already, I would ask yourself these and a hell of a lot more questions before considering it. Perhaps you should also consider asking your staff? I dont know the people in your school, and perhaps it could work in conjunction with other re-organisation, but they have valid opinions and should be listened to.
    On another note, I imagine there are plenty of adults related to the school that know elements of it well, governors, caretakers, teaching assistants...would you make any of these a DH?

    I agree with these comments 100%
    School business managers are there to do the bits that take heads away from their primary task - assuring and improving standards of learning and teaching. If they want to do these things, they need to be qualified and experienced teachers.
    Have the SBM on your team by all means (I've always had the equivalent role in my schools on the team, though none has had the gall to comment on things in which they have no experience), but you need an experienced teacher as your deputy.
