Sadness................my little dog

Many of you know I am a great animal lover. We have dogs, cats, chickens and horses.
Sadly my old Jack Russell is poorly. He would be 16 on 11th April and is a lovely old boy. Anyone who has owned a JRT will know they are big dogs in small bodies, with hearts of gold and enormous character.....as well as buckets of naughtiness and even more charm.
Last week he became poorly. Two visits to the vets were inconclusive and the only options were loads of tests and x-rays.
But he is an old dog.
What could they find that can be cured in a 16 year old?
His condition has worsened and the vet will come tomorrow to put him to sleep.
We have this evening to say our goodbyes and my son is driving over to see him.
I am in tears, Baby Belle is in tears, Mr Belle is in tears.
He's not just a dog. He's been my constant companion for 16 years and now I have to do the right thing............but it breaks my heart.

Hitting like didn't seem the correct response. You have my sympathy. Ours is your first terrier, had from a puppy, hopefully for us this is a few years off, but she is obviously getting older at 10 now.

I know. But it's so hard........
He will be PTS in front of the Aga with his friends and family with him.
    Can't ask for any more.

So sorry Belle. Animals are an integral part of the family and it's always so sad when they have to go.

But it's the right thing for him before he becomes really unhappy.

So sorry, Belle. Words are no good at a time like this. But later you'll remember that you loved him and he loved you back.

Losing a much-loved animal is awful. My Dad said, years ago when we lost our first Boxer, "They just don't live long enough."

Ah, Belle - I am so sorry; my Sabrina the cat passed on last August at 15, and I still think of her every day.:(

There is a lovely 'poem' about being a 'forever' pet which ends something like: 'I am forever in your heart' and about them being there, waiting in heaven for us. Your wee doggie had a good, happy life and you will be able to say good-bye. I remember you saying something about having/going through a rough patch awhile ago, sorry that your faithful friend is poorly now.......

    Biggest hugs:(

Oh Belle, you have my heartfelt sympathies.

We too have a 16 year old (this Easter) JR and they are indeed 'big dogs in small bodies. Ours is starting to have problems with his back legs climbing the back steps and often has incontinence problems. With all the issues with f-i-l husband couldn't bear to take him to the vets and it was only taking him to have him chipped the other day, that he mentioned the problems.

We've been told it may be as simple as a case of diabetes and 'doggy dementia' (he suffered brain damage after a bad fall chasing bunnies down a cliff years ago), but at 16 we know it may only be a temporary solution. So do understand where you're coming from.

Enjoy your last few hours with him and know that you wouldn't want to see him suffer.

If it should be that I grow old and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

When it comes to dogs nobody is more sentimental than I am. Nobody.

    Belle, I'm so sorry.
