Room changes

Discussion in 'Drama and performing arts' started by moredrama, Jan 19, 2011.

  1. Today I had to move two of my BTEC drama lessons out of the theatre (one of two designated drama spaces) and into a regular classroom because another subject just decided that they could use the theatre for there Yr 8 class to do their presentations. I couldn't use the hall (the other drama space)because of exams and a PE lesson.
What really annoyed me was the fact that I was not asked if this would be OK.The other teacher (who is a dept head) just went ahead and organised the change without asking if I would mind, or if it would even be possible.
Does anyone else have to put up with being shoved around to accomodate the whims of other staff? Am I being unreasonable by asking that I am allowed to use an appropriate room when teaching a practical BTEC lesson? Is it ridiculous that I would like to be asked to swap rooms rather than just being informed by the assistant head's PA?
Your thoughts please fellow drama teachers.

  3. Oooh, that'd wind me up something chronic! When I started at this school, I taught in the main hall and had it taken off me regularly for exams but, it became an unwritten agreement that if any other member of staff wanted to use the hall, they would check with me first. Since I've moved into another room, staff here have treated it like any other classroom. They book it on the system after checking that I am not using it for anything. When I move into my new space next month, I am hoping they will do the same. I can't believe you've been treated like that - it's disgusting.....you wouldn't ask a science lesson to be moved, or a DT lesson or even an Music lesson so, why a Drama lesson????

  4. Ours used to be pretty bad and isn't great now but it's definitely improved. The big events that can't be held elsewhere still take place in the theatre but usually they're in the calendar from the start of term. It can get pretty bad sometimes. Other than that they have to book the space and check with us first and usually they're not allowed it if it's something that could be done elsewhere, for examples presentations. One of the deputies oversees it. My argument is that you wouldn't expect a science teacher to keep moving out of a lab and they shouldn't expect a drama teacher to continually teach in a non-specialist space.
