I wonder why he was never honoured for services to cartooning?
Or perhaps he refused. Or maybe because he lived abroad for the last 50 years.
Even Giles got an OBE.
Matt has an MBE.
As has Bill Tidy.
Searle has a CBE
Mind you, the honours system seems to have ignored Larry, Steve Bell and Ralph Steadman as well as Ronald Searle.
Ooo. Do expand!
As I said in post 6, he was awarded a CBE
A-ha - just read No.6
That'll teach me not to assume I'm the only contributor to a post!
A CBE, eh! That's really high.
I wonder how I missed that in his biography on Wikipedia.
And now I'm entering the 'feeling really stupid' stage and 'hope that no-one has noticed'stage of the day.
All because of my desperation to get to 1000 posts before term starts.
Then I might start to be taken seriously!
'Oh no' sa Molesworth! A sad day at St Custards.
CHIZ CHIZ etc
Hello clouds, hello sky...
Those books were grate, as any fule know.
They were. Most amusing.
I didn't appreciate Searle so much when I was younger. We were all Giles fans in our house. (I have lots of old Giles annuals). I loved the Giles attention to detail and his wit too.
However over the years I liked the way Searl captured facial expression. The scratchy bits and ink blots used to annoy me but I must have mellowed with age because looking at some of his stuff today has made me appreciate him a bit more.
He had a good innings. R I P Ronald.
