    Volunteered the day war broke out and had a long and lively war in North Africa and Italy. In charge of a beach at Anzio too.

    His autobiography The Time of My Life is a political memoir worth reading. A brilliant man with many interests in his cultural "hinterland" outside politics. Shame he never made PM.

    Whilst still serving as Chancellor he appeared on The Morecambe & Wise Show singing 'You've got to pick a pocket or two' at the piano - that still makes me laugh.

    A hugely entertaining man from an era when politicians were allowed to have personalities, and most definitely not a silly billy. I've never forgotten this Private Eye cover:
