Requirements for GTP

Discussion in 'Trainee and student teachers' started by lievcin, Jun 28, 2011.

  1. Hi, I'm thinking of starting a GTP in Sept 2012. I can't really afford not to earn something while gaining the qualification, which is why this might be my only option to do this.

I was hoping to start applying for schools, but between now and the start of the programme to continue working where I am to try and save some money for when I take the pay cut in Sept 2012. However, I've seen a few places mentioning that in order to be considered for the GTP you must have some sort of experience in a school, which I don't.

Is this really a requirement or more of a preference from schools? I was thinking of when/if I find a school to try to do some volunteering here and there using up the holidays from work, but this would be after the application, not before.

Thanks you all for the iinformation

It depends on your phase- secondary GTP tend to have less experience particularly if teaching shortage subjects- and the local competition- in part determined by the number of GTP places . It also depends upon what system your EBITTs use- if there is a central application and then you are allocated to a school then there is less imperative to build a relationship with an individual school to employ you. Generally the GTP is based upon hitting the ground running as you need to hold down a teaching post while training so as much classroom experience you can gain gives the advantage.
