Science colleagues (I feel able to say that because my first degree was in 'Physics with Mathematics')

I am looking to collect a range of quotes (between two and six sentences?) from many other teachers commenting on the role maths and/or basic numeracy skills play in their specific subject (especially as a professional worker employed in that specialism), and hope you might help. I want to use the quotes as part of an in-school display (but can freely share it on TES if there's support from yourselves).

Although we in Maths try to emphasise to students the role Maths plays in many other disciplines, I think us Maths teachers have somewhat of a credibility problem and that many students discount, under-estimate or are ignorant about the true importance of good Maths skills to progress in other professions. If they’ve any serious scientific or engineering ambition of course, then a high level of achievement (A-level) in Maths is virtually a necessity – and it might well help the credibility of our message if we could use some direct quotes from yourself.

I’m not really talking about the role Maths plays in your GCSE/A-level subject (although that would be a helpful addition), but the importance/role Maths is likely to play for them in pursuing career-level employment or Further Education in your area.

I won't use your actual names, or TES ids, but would like the quotes to be attributable to (say) 'Biology specialist from N.E. England' or somesuch.

Ideally, I'm looking for a fairly wide range of perspectives. Thanks in advance for any help. MMT

Here are some quotes from me.

    • "Maths is the language for science."
    • "Science is mathematics in context or the practical application of maths."
    • "The numbers prove the point. Maths makes the science add up."
    • "It is a requirement at my school that you do A Level maths in order to do A level Physics."
    • "Only 7% of engineering graduates are female. The other 99% are male. Now do you see why maths is important?"
    • "40% of GCSE Physics is maths. This rises to more at A Level"
    • "Science without maths is like chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate chips or, to use a Physics analogy, plum puddings with no plumbs"
    • "Science without maths is like French without words."
    • "Maths matters more as it gives more meaning to matter"
    • "Without maths science would be easy"
