Have you heard of a school contacting an applicants employer for references before the offer of an interview?
    Is this a common thing?

    Yes.
This is long-listing, where they take up references on, say, a dozen applicants, and then decide which 5 or 6 to short-list and ask for interview.
    Best wishes

I do Application and Interview one-to-ones, and also contribute to the Job Application Seminars. We look at application letters, executive summaries and interviews, with practical exercises that people really appreciate.
I shall be doing the Win That Teaching Job seminar on Saturday February 25th, and also the Moving into Headship or SLT seminar on Saturday 18th February

I see. Its before the closing date for applications. So would you say it shows interest on their part?
    Thanks.

    Yes.
Unless . . . it is for a job that will not get many applicants (e.g. teaching Sanskrit in an inner-city comp in Brum), so they are taking up refs on everybody.
    Good luck!
