Referee - current emplyer

    Can the chair of governors be used as a refetee or does it have to be the head?

    The chair could be your second referee, but you must give the headteacher as one of the two.
    I would also say, however, that unless the chair has good knowledge of your capabilities as a teacher (and leader, if it's a leadership post), I can't see what kind of reference s/he would be able to offer and another member of staff (deputy head, head of dept or phase leader as applicable according to the type of school you work in) would be more appropriate.
