Recruiting New Headteacher

    Out HT is retiring at the end of the school year. We have explored possible cooperation and EHT arrangement with another school and are not comfortable to proceed at this stage. This has used up recruitment time. There is a credible interim option. Are we better to wait to the "prime" headteacher recruitment time in the spring term? How much better a set of applicants are we likely to get by waiting? Or are we likely to put people off by having an interim option in place (who will apply)?

    I am retiring in the summer and the GB are advertising my job now. We have had 8 applications so will hopefully appoint someone.

    If you want someone to start in September then you may have left it too late for existing heads to apply as they need to reign by the end of April. DHT's have until the end of May.

    An interim HT in place who is also applying may put people off but you will have to take that chance.

    Do you have the capacity within school for the DH to act up to cover the interim period? It often works well as it allows people to try out the role and to see if Headship is for them.
