I'm trying to find some new materials to assess reading in KS2. Last year, we used the RIsing Stars tests every half term but found that these were really difficult. Can anybody recommend some reading assessment materials that we could use every term ideally so three tests for each year group?

    Many thanks,

We use CGP as they are good value. Unfortunately our children did reasonably well in them lulling us into a false sense of security when they sat the National Curriculum Tests in May (only ~50% above 100 on the scaled score.) Next year we will have to shift the grade boundaries expected on them to be more realistic.

Given that 'really difficult' seems to be the new benchmark for government tests at KS2, you may be best sticking with Rising Stars.

Do they offer tests for Years 3, 4 and 5 too? Thanks for your response.

The do a huge range of practice question books for all years but I guess Benbamboo is referring to the packs of actual sample tests which were aimed at end of key stage, so year 6 only. Maths good but English a bit too easy. We're in exactly same position, used Rising Stars but felt they were too hard. Wrong there then! Rising Stars has a lot of fingers in government pies and is often ahead of the other publishers in knowing what's coming. We're going to stick with them this year. Have you got any of their achieve 100 and 100+ books? Worth a look.

We used PIRA and found they accurately reflected the yr 6 tests. There are three tests a year for every year group.Rising stars publish them now.

We use PUMA too and we felt they also accurately reflect the tests.

We use HEADSTART which provide reading comprehension papers and a termly test and are available from Y1-6. They are hard but gave us realistic results which correlated with our KS2 results
