These monologues in the current Archers are just so dreary. I'll bet hardly anyone ever attempts Puzzle for the Day. It seems to be always set by a Maths teacher called Bobby Segal - he has too much time on his hands. Thought for the Day continues to be mind-numbingly boring. The only Thought for the Day I enjoy is presented by Rev Giles Fraser - but I never agree with his point of view.

Is The Archers still on? My ex girlfriend never missed an episode in the early 90s how can it be even more dreary than it was then?. I listen to R4 sometimes on the way to work, how long has Puzzle for the day been going? Ive never tried to resolve it.

I grew up believing that, if you didn't get to the radio in time to turm the Archers music off before it ended, the witch would get you.

Is it the heartburn? Do you have to be so rude?

I never listen to the Archers, and have to turn it off before the music ends, like @nizebaby.
However, when I do hear it, it always takes me back to being a small child circa 1963: the music is on the radio, the sun is shining as it sinks over the railway line that ran along our back garden, and I am sitting down to a tea of fish fingers, chips and peas.

Thought for the day has always been terrible. The only good one there has ever been was when Dawn French did one as the Vicar of Dibley.

The Archers monologues are dreary and the stories ridiculous. I don't know why they couldn't do better, with modern technology. It doesn't feel as if they've tried very hard. When I look at what our choir director, an amateur, has been able to put together on her own in her spare time, with our varying quality individual recordings, I can't help but wonder why the BBC can't manage something better with all its resources and expertise.

Yes. I cannot believe that an experienced radio producer with all the technology of the BBC at his/her disposal can't engineer 75minutes a week of the Archers.so that it sounds like a normal radio series.

Oddly enough we were having this very conversation last night. My husband, who is an experienced broadcaster, was making that very point.

You could just put him/her on ignore and then you wouldn't see them.

Back in the 1980s I used to listen to the Archers - when I went off to Canada Dad would record me a few weeks on a cassette tape (remember them) and mail them to me and I would listen to them.

When I got back to the UK in 1990 I just stopped listening for some reason and never got back to it.

To be honest I find a lot of Radio 4 mind numbingly tedious these days.

I appear to be the only person who is quite enjoying the Archers monologues!

I also thought that odd. Surely it should be possible for the actors to record their individual parts at home and put them all together. It seems much simpler than online choirs or orchestras which have been done quite successfully.

Previously I usually listened 2 or 3 times a week to the Archers, I found it was quite easy to pick up the story even though I missed about half the episodes. I tried a few minutes of the monologues but soon gave up.

I think Melvyn Bragg is quite good at literary topics but way out of his depth in science. He sometimes comes over as quite rude and abrupt. I think he is losing it a bit. And the programme is so long! As a French specialist who studied Medieval at unj I was excited about a programme about Alebard and Eloise but baulked at the thought of 45 mins.

I find it’s one of the most interesting programmes around - there are just so many interesting topics covered ( and of course some I find less interesting just as others will) ) - and with experts commenting on them
45 mins too long for a talk on Abelard and Heloise? Or on any subject for that matter. Actually I’m sure most subjects could be much longer to cover them in some more depth.

Perhaps one of its ‘problems’ is that it’s not shouty when the experts disagree - but rather grown up in its delivery and of course many of its subjects do require serious listening and there is rarely a simple answer or conclusion to the debates - so not really very ‘21st century media’ which is why I like it.

@Ivartheboneless I wouldn't bother if I were you. You'll end up on the wrong end of it.
