I think I'd like to see more detail of the planned changes before asking, querying or even commenting further.

    Will it be nice?
  5. Can you make Gardening a proper forum, please? If there are too many you could merge it with Cookery into Home and Garden and we could talk about wallpaper and cathedral ceilings too.

    You say 10 main fora.

So that means not even a forum for each subject! But don't list the sciences separately as they just take you straight to Science, so you can get rid of 3 fora without changing anything.

Please keep Cookery.......everyone's nice on there and it is used a lot compared to many.

you could have a forum for all the socks.they could have a good time fighting amongst themselves and leaving the rest alone !
  8. Hmm. Ten forums.

Forget my request for Gardening then. We can just have a thread - it will probably get more traffic that way.

Will there still be a Scotland forum?

    Ditto everything wot oldsomeman sez.

Having read the information, one aim is to make the site "cleaner". What does that mean? [IMG] Can BelleDuJour still be norty?

Whatever the site wants I'm sure both BDJ and I will be able to have fun as and when we so desire.

I suspect that the "cleaner" term refers specifically to the software and not the content but pending more detail I'm just guessing.

    Need much more detail!

You do realise that groups are currently giving people huge amounts of support on here without having to have conversations and swap info in the full glare forum public? They have been a real benefit to lots of people. Have you done any research on them, or asked us?

I can think of one that is about to be cut - gives support to some really deserving people in times of extreme stress.

Will Special Education still exist in some form? Where will it sit? We are not just secondary or just primary nr does it sit easily with a specific subject. There's so much support on the current forum for those of us working in a very specialised area, support that's not readily available elsewhere. Special Ed is a small community and can be quite isolating so we need the forum for support . We could easily get lost in a bigger forum, especially for those of us working in special schools.

The loss of the private group facility is disastrous. It was the ONLY good reason for staying around after the previous 'imrpovements'. You have no idea how many posters have been assisted with pastoral and employment rights support in private groups, where it is vital that discussion is kept away from the eyes of vexacious employers.

Simplifying the community seems sensible. The blogs were getting in the way a bit (giving each area three front pages: general, blog and forum) and their content can easily be replicated elsewhere. The numbers posting when the last redesign was implemented dropped massively ? and I suspect the confusing layout was the main reason for this.

However, 10 forums seems too few. It means each subject won't have its own forum. Discussing English teaching was my sole reason for registering here and, despite branching out a bit, the vast majority of my posting is still in the English forum. Yes, some forums are underused and need closing/merging with others, but going down to 10 is too far.

The private groups issue is an interesting one. They were also hard to find and made things élite. A bad move. I remember we were told that the massive drop in posts was due to members moving to private groups. TES now seem to be admitting this was a lie and, as most suspected, the private groups are barely used at all. I certainly have never used one. However, GardeningLeaves makes a very valid point that some of private groups serve a vital purpose to those in great distress. This service needs to continue on TES, either through private groups or something equivalent.

Whilst not as important as some the groups mentioned above (in any way) since the last change I have been using a thread on a private group to test work-arounds and solutions to the many problems that resulted from the original major update (and subsequent minor ones)

Whilst I know this is only a minor matter, and many don't think it should be necessary that sort of work has helped a lot of posters to find ways to keep posting on here (rather than giving up in disgust)

We have been told that such work won't be necessary with the next change but I've yet to see any site get things right first time (and since 2004) this site never has done so so a little space to allow users to "find" ways to use the site the way they want to might be of benefit.

Even if I won't be "helping" this time

I had not realised that this thread was for posters to respond directly to other posters, tidal.

However, as you seem to have set the precedent, a brief message back to your unnecessary explanation (as you seem to be unable to detect even the most obvious irony):

yes, I do realise what "cleaner" means in this context. I doubt very much that your idea of "fun" is anywhere near Belle's.
  18. Maybe we need a "Handbags at Dawn" forum?

butt in post anywhere VR as you have probably noticed*
And whilst I did recognise the ironic tone I thought that a simple explanation might be of use to those without your grasp of terminology if simply to avoid posters getting excited/worried without real cause

*and will continue to do so up to (and probably after) the moderators tell me not to [IMG]

Do read but if i remember all threads might start like new.empty.They are all to be cleared. So if you want material from threads you might need to back this up as we are(i believe) starting with a clean sheet.

I hope the private Pm is staying it has been such a blessing to me at times.
