Putting quality first: some changes to Tes Resources

I really don't understand why we need these royalty tiers. Why can't we just have a fair commission rate for ALL authors, regardless of number of resources or sales per year? Say 70% for everyone? The proposed new model penalises authors with niche markets, or those who offer good value. And the 30p transaction charge is ridiculous, you're already taking 20-40% commission so there's absolutely no need for this on top, it's just greedy. If a £3 transaction doesn't have a charge then a 60p one shouldn't either. The transaction charge penalises authors (like myself) whose resources are mainly individual activities or worksheets which tend to be low-cost items, but still high-quality and useful. I just count myself lucky that I create science resources rather than a more niche area, as I'd be completely scuppered under the proposed new system. Never mind the wrong tree, TES seem to be barking up the wrong forest.

I agree Galvanise, way too high! Halving them would be more reasonable.

I have never agreed with the 30p transaction charge from day one...:(

I've said this elsewhere tonight in the original consultation threads, but the likes of the 30p transaction fee and the overall royalty rates are not good. I'm being polite here. I shan't repeat copy the things I've said a few times in other threads, but I think if there was a wide-range of incentives to authors to create good quality resources that then, in turn, was 'rewarded' by TES by taking a much lower percetage of a sale for the author's resource, we'd see more good quality resources made, more sales and therefore more income for all. I also think giving authors more control and features to promote their resources such as more preview windows and more analytics would help massively. Again, I've mentioned these ideas in more details in other threads.

I am also seriously reconsidering my authorship on TES, despite starting this year believing it would be the biggest focus on my time and attention. I want to expand my shop and grow the business, but I don't know how to get that support from TES. Instead, it feels like punishment.

Thanks to everyone for their comments - I've been chatting with a few of you over the phone in the last few weeks.

As many of you have already spotted we're going to be trying out a transaction-fee-free July, as that is one of the times of the year lighter resources are in greatest demand. Thanks to the authors who suggested variations of that. We've also listened to the feedback around the floor prices, and will be lowering them only to £1, not to 60p as previously announced.

There's still more work we need to do on our side around routes for authors to maintain Gold or get better value from Silver. We're doing a lot of further analysis and testing on that. Thanks to everyone for your patience in the meantime.

Why is the new commission a popularity context? Most sales doesn't mean best quality. It just means most popular. This is like saying that Frozen is qualitatively better than The Frost Queen. No it's not - it's just more popular, not that it's better in quality.

Glad to hear that TES is making efforts to find some middle ground. I've taken a look at ***, but TES is such a user-friendly website in comparison. I'm waiting to see how this situation resolves.

I should like to thank TES, @mikeshaw, for listening to us and making a start by abolishing the 30p charge for July at least. It has made a difference for me and I should have thought it has made a difference for others too. Should this charge go for good, I will definitely consider publishing more resources at a lower price, which should make them more affordable for buyers and in turn bring in more revenue for TES.
    Thank you TES.

Thanks, I've been a TES Author from when the paid program 1st started in 2015 (before all these different tiers and transaction fees etc). Its no wonder my profits are down looking at this. Thanks for posting

    Hello,
Please could @TES Resource Team confirm what day the proposed royalty changes will come into effect? Also - is there a way of finding the information through the site of the total value of sales in the past year? I keep track of my earnings, but I have not kept track of the value of sales made so I could be close to reaching silver - or very far. I really have no idea.

Also, how will going up a royalty tier work?

    Many thanks.

My resources take me hours and hours to produce. TES is awash with poor quality resources especially the FREE one that clearly are not vetted. Royalty rates per sales per rolling year is ridiculous. TES say goodbye to many authors.

Tes, is there due to be an update regarding the royalty changes? If I remember rightly they are set to be implemented soon and it was stated that a new proposal would be forthcoming.
